Find unsaved screenshots in Snagit

There are different ways and software tools you can capture screen on a Windows PC. Snipping tool is the built-in app in Windows to help users easily take a screenshot or capture anything displaying on their computer screen. Mac users can also capture screen using system built-in apps as well. These tool allow users to capture screen without downloading or installing third party programs. Find the unsaved screen captures in Snagit Library

Run Snagit Editor on your computer, click Library tab from its top left menu bar. You can find all screen captures and capture history there. They are categorized into various groups. For example, if it is a screen captured from a website, you can go to the Website menu and search the screenshots according to the website address or domain name. If you took screenshots of some installed app on your computer, you can click the Applications category and locate the screenshots according to the software name. You can also find screengrabs by date. The Recent Captures stores all captures taken in the past four weeks and any files viewed or saved in Snagit. Of course a search tool is provided. You can simply enter a search term, image file name, tags, in the search field and search the screenshots from Snagit library.

Locate the unsaved Snagit captures in File Browser

If you use Snagit on Windows computer, you can find those unsaved screen captures from below path(s):

  • Windows XP:  C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR_USER_NAME\Local Settings\Application Data\TechSmith\SnagIt\DataStore
  • From Windows Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 to Windows 10 above:  C:\Users\YOUR_USER_NAME\AppData\Local\TechSmith\SnagIt\DataStore

From the Windows file explorer you will find the Snagit library are auto-saved in special file format with .snag as their file extension. You can’t preview them in file explorer. However you can sort them by date and time. This can help you find those unsaved screenshots easily if you can remember when they were captured. If you like to open and view them, simply double click on them to open, view and edit them using Snagit Editor.
