The Gmail app for Android now works with any third-party email accounts that support IMAP or POP3. You can use Gmail app to manage all your email accounts on Android mobile phone. We will use an Android powered LG smartphone in this demo to show you how to add non-Gmail account to the Gmail app on LG and other Android phones. Note that some Android phones may come with other mail apps other than Gmail app. Check out this tutorial to add Hotmail to Samsung phone, just as an example.
Open Gmail app on your LG phone. If no email account was added before, you will see the + Add an email address link from the home screen of the Gmail app. Tap on it to open the Set up email screen which gives you a list of options as shown below.
From the above screenshot, you can see the Gmail app supports many other email services such as Google Gmail, Microsoft Outlook/Hotmail/Live mail, Yahoo mail, Exchange and Office 365, other IMAP/POP3 email accounts.
Choose Outlook, Hotmail, Live option to begin adding a mail service from Microsoft to Gmail app on your Android phone. I am using a Hotmail account in this example, but the process should be the same with Outlook and Live mail. When the Sign in window opens, enter the full email address here, such as yourusername@hotmail.com, and tap Next button to proceed.
Enter your password for the Hotmail, Outlook or Live mail account. And then tap Sign in.
Allow the application permissions to access your email account and other data in the next screen. Gmail app will then validate your mail server settings. Once the authentication finished, Gmail will bring up the Account options screen as below.
You can set or change the sync frequency, notification, attachment download settings here. At the last step, you can choose the Account name displayed in the Gmail app and your name displayed on sent messages. You can leave them as they are, and simply press Next step to confirm and finish setting up your Microsoft mail account, Outlook, Hotmail or Live mail, in the Gmail app on Android phone.
Your emails will then start to download on to your phone, you can go to check your emails from non-Gmail account using the stock Gmail app now or continue to add additional email account to your Android phone.
