Apple introduced a new image format called HEIC with iOS 11 for storing photos taken on the iPhone and iPad. If you want to transfer iPhone or iPad photos in this new format to other devices or computer, you may need to convert the HEIC photos to JPG, JPEG, PNG or other more popular image format. In a related article, we showed how you can convert HEIC photos to JPG using the Files app on iPhone. Or you can simply tweak the settings to transfer iPhone photos to computer as HEIC or JPG format.
What to do if I already sent the photos to computer as HEIC files?
There are many image conversion options out there. For example, you can convert HEIF HEIC to JPG on Windows PC using a free HEIF converter. If you are on Mac running a recent version of Mac OS, you don’t have to download or use any third-party HEIC converters, the Preview app can be used to open, view and convert HEIC to other formats like PNG, JPEG, TIFF and so on.
Convert HEIC to JPG, JPEG, PNG using Preview on Mac
Double click a HEIC photo on Mac to open it with the default image viewer, the Preview app. If it is not set as the default HEIC viewer, you can simply right click on the HEIC picture, then choose Open With > Preview.
Once the HEIC picture is opened in Preview, click File > Export, then select the output format, JPEG, PNG, TIFF or else, choose a folder to save it on your Mac.
Mass convert HEIC to JPG, JPEG, PNG using Preview
Select two or more HEIC images in Finder, right click, then choose Open With > Preview. Select all the images in the left thumbnail preview pane, click File menu, choose Export Selected Images from the drop-down menu. In the new window, choose a target location to save the files, click Options button to another image format you need, like PNG, JPEG, TIFF, or else. Finally hit the Choose button to convert all selected HEIC images to other format you have specified.
Note that if you trying to batch convert many HEIC images using Preview, it may fail, try to add less photos to convert each time.
