One of the new features of iOS 11 is the new image format .heic instead of .jpg. Thanks to better compression, the High-Efficiency Image Format (HEIF) can save up to 50% of storage. However you may run into incompatibility issues when you share HEIF HEIC image file to an Android or even your desktop PC. Luckily iOS 11 also allows users to shoot JPEG photos on new iPhone models, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X or later. To do that, you just need to configure the iOS system settings and choose the camera format from “High Efficiency” to “Most compatible”, and then new photos captured using your iPhone camera will be saved as JPEG files automatically. You can find more details from this tutorial to shoot JPEG pictures on iPhone 8, iPhone X or later.
If you do not want to change the default photo file type, use an image editor to convert iPhone HEIC photos to JPG, JPEG, PNG or TIFF. When you plan to export photos to a Windows PC or old Mac machines that do not support this new picture format, you can also tweak the photos transfer settings to automatically convert HEIF HEIC to JPG format upon transfer to computer.
In case you missed this step as well, you can use a third party HEIC HEIF converter to convert an .HEIF/.HEIC to JPG on a PC. In this article, we will use an HEIF converter to do the conversion when you shoot photos in HEIC/HEIF format on iPhone 8, iPhone X, iOS 11 and you have not configured the photos transfer settings to enable the HEIC/HEIF to JPG automatic conversion on iPhone.
