Convert image file format using Paint in Windows

Digital photos and pictures come in different file formats, such as PNG, JPG, BMP, GIF, JPE, JPEG, TIF. PNG, JPG and JPEG are the most popular image file formats used by most digital cameras and mobile phones. They are able to save high quality images without creating large files, thus they take less storage space on your device and easier to be shared and transferred. Sometimes however we may need to manually change the photo’s original file type. For example, you may want to convert HEIC to JPG, JPEG, convert PNG to JPG, change WebP to PNG or JPEG. If you want to do this on your Windows computer, you can follow below steps.

How to change image file format using Windows Paint app?

Luckily Windows comes with the easy to use yet free image editor, the Microsoft Paint app, we can use to convert photo types or formats on our computer. If your source photos is saved on your mobile phone, you can connect up your phone to computer and change image format on the computer easily.

Paint is a built-in app in Windows. To find Paint on Windows PC, type “paint in the search box on the taskbar right to the classic Start menu, and then select Paint from the list of results to launch it. To find the MS Paint app, you can also click Start menu, then choose All Apps > Paint.

Once MS Paint is launched on your Windows PC, click File >> Open, then find and open the source image you like to change its format. Or you can simply press CTR+O on the keyboard to quickly open the Open File dialogue to import photos to Paint app on your PC. After that you can optionally edit the image file, such as resize photos, crop images, rotate photos, etc. To convert photo type or file format to a different one, click File > Save As, then choose your target image type or format, such as PNG, JPEG, GIF, BMP, etc.

Generally speaking, BMP picture files can save any kind of pictures in high quality and use it on your computer. PNG pictures can save high quality photos and drawing and use them on both your computer and the web. JPEG image files save photos with good quality that can be used on your computer, in email or on the web. GIF pictures save simple drawing with lower quality and compact size and ideal for the use in emails or on the web. You can convert any imported images from their source file formats to any other picture types as specified above.

Other than that, there are more image types and formats available for your choice. Choose Other Format from the Save as sub-menu to find and select more possible file types, including TIFF, HEIC, etc.
