Convert MP4 to M4V on Mac

You can directly rename the video in Finder and change the file extension from .mp4 to .m4v, this is the easiest way to convert MP4 to M4V format on Mac. If you can’t play a MP4 file with QuickTime or any QT based application on Mac, you can firstly try to change the file extension from .mp4 to .m4v see if any luck. They are the exact same file, no differences in the content or container itself.

Method 1. Rename a video file from mp4 to m4v

Find the video file in Finder on your Mac. Right click on it and choose Rename from the contextual menu. Other than change the file name, we select and change its extension instead. Then change its extension from .MP4 to .M4V.

You’ll be asked whether you are sure to change the extension from .mp4 to .m4v, if you make this change, your document may open in a different application. Click Use .m4v to confirm. Go to play the video in m4v format using the player you prefer see if any luck.

Other than manually change an .mp4 to .m4v on Mac, there are many video convertors you can find and use on the web. 

Method 2. Convert a video from mp4 to m4v

UniConverter, as its name says, is a great tool for converting videos. It can do a whole lot of other things like downloading videos from the Internet, compress large videos, edit videos, record screen, merge videos and many more.

Run UniConverter, click Converter from its Home interface. Then click Add button to select and import the MP4 file from your computer to the converter. We are using UniConverter Mac version in this demo. If you are on a Windows PC, you will see some difference in appearance.

Click the File Settings icon, which can be found between the video details section and the Convert button. In the new dialog you will have the options to choose output video format, video resolution, audio format, audio quality, etc.

In this case, we choose Video > M4V, then select a resolution the same as source or a different one if need. Finally hit the Convert button to convert the MP4 to M4V format. The video will be saved to the Converted folder by default. You can find and open it from the File Location at the bottom of the Converter screen as shown in above screenshot.
