VLC is a top-rated free media player but its functionality goes beyond that. It is packed with many useful features. In this article, we will show you the quick steps you can follow to convert a video or audio to another format or codec using VLC media player on a Windows PC.

How to convert a video using VLC player?
Launch VLC media player on your computer. Click Media from the top menu bar, then choose Convert/Save from the drop-down menu.

You will then see the Open Media window. Click the Add… button to find the video you like to edit or transcode and add it to VLC. Repeat the steps to add extra video clips if you want to convert multiple video files at the same time. Then click on the Convert / Save button in the bottom right corner.

The Convert window opens. In the Settings section, a video profile will be selected automatically. Here you can choose a profile from the Profile drop-down menu. For example, you can choose Video – H.264 + MP3 (MP4) as the profile. Optionally click Customize button for more options like format, video codec, audio codec, and subtitles.
In the Destination section, click Browse button to select the output folder where you like to export the video to. Choose a different location or folder to avoid overwriting the original video when you export or save the video.

When you are ready, hit the Start button to encode the video with the new format and codec specified above. When finished, open the output folder in Windows File Explorer to find the converted video file.
