calibre is a cross-platform, powerful, easy to use, free and open source e-book manager. It is available for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS. See how to download and install its Windows version on a computer below.
First of all, go to download the free ebook manager and converter onto your computer. Choose the type of computer on which you plan to use calibre on the Download page. Here we choose Windows as we are going to use it on our PC. The Download for Windows page opens. You will see that calibre works on Windows 8 and higher and download links on this page. If you are using Windows 7 or Vista, please use calibre 3.48 and the download link can be found at the page bottom.
Once you finished download the installer through your web browser, you will save it as .msi file onto your computer hard drive, usually the default Downloads folder on your PC. Double click the installer file to start the setup process.
You have to read and agree the terms in the license agreement before you can continue the setup process. Click to enable the ‘I accept the terms in the License Agreement‘ option. Then click Install to install the product with default options for all users. Or click Advanced to change installation options, notably the destination folder or location.
Click Advanced button, you will see the current default destination folder for calibre installation, which is usually under the Program Files on your system drive. If you like to save storage on the system drive or prefer to install new programs to other hard drive, click Change to choose another.
Next, we will have the chance to select product features. For example, Program Files is all the files you will need to run the Calibre book manager, you can choose to add shortcuts to the Windows Start menu or not, you can choose to create a shortcut on your desktop or not and so on. Select the way you want features to be installed.
Finally hit the Install button and wait for the program to be installed on your PC. You will see the Setup Wizard complete screen as shown below with the option to launch calibre instantly. Click the Finish button to exit the Setup Wizard.
Change Calibre library folder
When you run the book manager for the first time, you will be prompted to choose a destination folder to save all your books on the computer. You can choose to leave it to the default. Below is the Calibre default folder location:
- Windows: C:\Users\User Name\Documents\Calibre Library
- Mac: /Users/User Name/Calibre Library
If you like to save the storage on your system drive or prefer to save them to another location, change the default library folder now or change it later from the calibre library menu > Switch/create library.
