Enable USB Debugging on Xiaomi Redmi Phone

USB debugging is intended for Android developers who want to install custom apps and test them on the Android phone for debugging purpose. If you just buy a new Xiaomi or Redmi phone, you can’t find the USB debugging option in the settings. It is because USB debugging is hidden by default. To turn on USB debugging on Xiaomi Redmi phones, you need to firstly enable Developer Options on Xiaomi or Redmi mobile phones. Then find and activate USB debugging from the Developer Options section on the phone. USB debugging is just one of the advanced features of Developer Options.

Step 1. Enable Developer Options on Xiaomi Redmi Phone

As we mentioned above, enabling USB debugging on Xiaomi phones is part of the Developer Options. Thus we have to enable Developer Options on your Xiaomi phone first.

Based on the specific phone model and the version of MIUI, the steps to exact steps to turn on Developer Options on Xiaomi, Redmi or Poco phone may be slightly different.

Open the Settings app on your Mi phone. Scroll down and look for an option called About phone or About device. Find and tap on an option named MIUI version or MIUI build number. You should tap on this option multiple times (usually seven times) in quick succession.

When you are prompted to enter your Mi Account password on the screen, do so to confirm your action.

Step 2. Enable USB Debugging on Xiaomi Redmi Phone

There are basically two steps to enable USB Debugging on Xiaomi and Redmi mobile phones: 1) turn on Developer mode on your Android phone, refer to Step 1 above or click through the linked guide at the first paragraph for more details; 2) follow below steps to activate USB debugging on Xiaomi or Redmi phones.

Now go to Settings >> Developer Options, touch the toggle to enable Developer Options, then find and tap on USB debugging to activate it on Xiaomi or Redmi phone.

Go to Settings >> Additional Settings >> Developer Options, touch the switch at the top to enable Developer Options, you will then find various advanced settings listed.

Go to the Debugging section, touch the toggle to allow USB debugging on Xiaomi or Redmi phone.

After that you will get a message saying:

Allow USB Debugging?

USB debugging is intended for development purposes only. Use it to copy data between your computer and your device, install apps on your device without notification, and read log data.

Tap on OK button to enable USB debugging on Xiaomi Redmi phone. When you connect your mobile to computer through USB, you will get another prompt like below.

USB Debugging (Security settings)
In some MIUI versions, you may also find the USB Debugging (Security settings) option which allows granting permissions and simulating input via USB debugging. You will need to sign in your Mi account first in order to turn it on.
