When you upgrade to a new PC or Mac, you may want to copy iTunes content from one computer to another. In an earlier article, we already demonstrated how you can transfer music from iTunes to external storage. Songs can then be copied from the portable hard drive, flash drive to the new computer. If you do not want to recreate your music playlist on the new computer, you can also transfer music playlist from the old to the new PC or Mac. To do that, you can simply export playlist from iTunes on the first computer, then copy the iTunes playlist to the new computer, run iTunes and import the playlist to iTunes. In this tutorial, we will discuss how you can export and import iTunes playlists on both Windows and Mac separately.
How to export and import iTunes playlist on Windows?
Run iTunes for Windows on your PC, click File >> Library from iTunes menu bar, you can then choose to import playlist or export playlist from there. If you can’t see the iTunes menu bar, simply press Ctrl+B keys on the keyboard to show it. This is the place you can export playlist from iTunes to computer or import playlist from computer to iTunes. To export playlist from iTunes to PC, make sure to click and highlight the playlist in iTunes first.
How to export and import iTunes playlist on Mac?
To import or export playlist to or from iTunes on Mac is similar to what we do above. Run iTunes for Mac, then go to the top Apple menu bar, click File >> Library, you can then choose to import playlist or export playlist from there. To export playlist from iTunes to Mac, click and highlight the playlist in iTunes first, choose File >> Library >> Export Playlist, you will then have the choice to rename iTunes playlist, choose where to save iTunes playlist on Mac. If you have saved playlists on Mac and want to import playlist from Mac to iTunes, choose File >> Library >> Import Playlist, you can then browse to the folder where the playlists are saved and add them to iTunes.
How to transfer iTunes playlists between PC and Mac?
You can not only transfer iTunes playlists between Windows computers, or between Mac computers, but also export or import iTunes playlists between a Windows and Mac. However you need to manually update the file path to the music songs in the iTunes playlist files. iTunes playlists will be exported and saved as TXT files, you can use the Notepad on Windows or TextEdit on Mac to edit them.
Find the iTunes Media & Music folder on computer
You can find the iTunes Media folder is in your iTunes folder following below file location:
- Mac: Finder > username > Music
- Windows Vista or later: \Users\username\Music\
- Windows XP: \Documents and Settings\username\My Documents\My Music\

Go to the iTunes Preferences page, you can find iTunes media folder location on Windows computer as shown in below screenshot. It is similar with iTunes for Mac. Update the iTunes Media & Music folder in Playlist
You can follow below samples to update the music file path in iTunes playlist accordingly. Basically you will not only need to change the music files path, but also use backslash in the file path for Windows PC and colon symbol in the file path for Mac.
