Install Fonts on Mac

Can’t find the perfect font for your project? Mac makes it very easy to download, preview, install and enable new fonts. Follow below steps to manually install new fonts on your Mac.

Installing from Font Book

Font Book is a system application comes with the Mac. It simplifies the process of managing types, including previewing, installing, uninstalling, and organizing them.

Open the Launchpad, find and run Font Book app. You can explore all your current fonts. Fonts that appear dimmed in Font Book are either disabled, or are additional fonts available for download from Apple. Click Download in Font Book or choose Edit > Download from the top menu bar to download the font.

Download and install new fonts from Internet

Download a new font from third-party sources. You can download fonts on the internet, import new fonts from other computers.

Mac supports TrueType (.ttf), Variable TrueType (.ttf), TrueType Collection (.ttc), OpenType (.otf), and OpenType Collection (.ttc) fonts. Mac OS Mojave adds support for OpenType-SVG fonts.

Find the downloaded fonts file in Finder on Mac. If it is in zip format, double click to extract it. Then double click the font file to open it. Font Book app will open automatically. Meanwhile the font preview window opens. If the font is not yet installed, you will see (not installed) at the low left corner of the font preview window and the Install Font button at the bottom right. Click on it to start installing new fonts on Mac. You will be prompted to enter your system password to authorize the change.
