PS3 Video Tips

Not all MP4 files can be played on PS3. PS3 can play most MP4 video files with extension of .mp4, however the video codec has to be MPEG-4 AVC H.264 /Xvid/DivX and audio codec of AAC. Other MP4 video files, such as MPEG-4 ASP, are incompatible on PS3.

There are also restrictions of the MPEG-4 AVC H.264 codec for PS3 playback, it has to meet below specifications:

  • AVC Profile: Baseline, Main or High Profiles
  • AVC Level: 4.2
  • No maximum bit rate specified. But, if video bit rate is above 20Mbps, the playback on PS3 may have issues, such as stuttering might occur
  • No B-Pyramid and P4x4 support
  • 4GB limit for streaming H.264 files
