We delete those unwanted text messages on our Samsung mobiles from time to time. By deleting them, we can clear up our storage and leave more space for other important data or applications on our Samsung device. However we might delete some important text SMS messages by mistake. Is there a way to get back the deleted text messages from our Samsung smartphone, like Galaxy S4, Galaxy S5, S6, S7? In this guide, we will introduce you the world’s first Android data rescue software which can help you restore or recover the formatted or missing data on your Android device. We will be using Samsung mobile phone in the example to show you how to recover delete text messages from Samsung and more Android devices, it applies to not only Samsung smartphone but also LG phone, HTC smartphones, Motorola, Nexus, Lenovo, ZTE, Huawei, and more mobile phones, Android tablets and many other cell phones that are running on Android OS system.

Honestly there are a few Android data recovery utilities can do this. However Dr. Fone for Android is for sure a masterpiece for this. Not to mention it is the World’s first Android data recovery software, it is easy to use for beginners (do not get panic when we say ‘data recovery’, it is really not that difficult), it is powerful enough to recover many other lost data like photos, videos, contacts, call history, audio files, documents, etc. Just take a look at all the positive feedback from thousands of Android cellphone users, especially the Samsung users’ comments, you can’t go wrong with it. Before we go to use this Android recovery application to recover lost text messages from Samsung mobile phone, you can firstly download it for free below.

Recover Deleted text messages from Samsung mobile phone

Make sure not to use your phone before we are going to retrieve the lost text SMS on Samsung smartphones with the Android Data Recovery application. It is because any new data saved in the storage may erase or overwrite those deleted data on your mobile device.

There are four steps to retrieve lost text messages on Samsung mobiles:

Step 1. Enable USB Debugging on Samsung phone

If you are not familiar with this option and want to know what is USB debugging, when and how to enable or disable this option on a Android device, you can refer to an early post here: How to enable USB debugging mode on Samsung mobile phones?.

The Android data recovery tool will also prompt you to enable USB debugging before you can use it to recover data from Samsung smart phones. Different Android versions may differ in appearance or settings of this option.

Step 2. Connect up your Samsung mobile to computer

Now connect your Samsung cell phone to computer with the USB data cord. The Android data recovery program for Windows PC or Mac OS X can automatically detect your mobile device connection.

Step 3. Scan Samsung mobile phone

The Samsung data rescue utility will need to firstly analyze your mobile device and temporary root will apply in order to retrieve the maximum data from your phone’s storage. After that you will have the option to scan Samsung phone storage. Since all files, external SD cards, internal memory will be scanned, it may take some time to complete.

The Android phone data recovery is capable of retrieving many different file types, you will have an option as shown in below screen capture to select which file type you want to get back. Currently you can get back mobile contacts, text messages, WhatsApp messages & attachments, Gallery, Audio, Videos, Documents from your Samsung tablets and mobiles. By default all file types will be selected. However it takes more time compared to recover specific files. In this case, we are going to recover deleted text messages from Samsung phone, we can check only Messaging and uncheck other options to save a lot of time in scanning the whole mobile device and all its data.

Step 4. Preview and Retrieve deleted text messages from Samsung mobile

The scan result will be organized into different group in the left side navigation menu. Click Messages to display all found text messages in the middle column.

recover deleted text messages from samsung phone to mac

If you click on a specific contact or number, you can review the details about the messages on the right column, such as message content, date. Right above the text SMS window, there will be an option ‘Only display deleted item’, you can turn it on to narrow down the search. You can tick the first box to quickly select and deselect all text message. You will have three choices to recover the lost text messages from your Samsung mobile phone, right click on the selected messages, you will find options to recover only the highlighted SMS message, recover selected SMS messages, recover all text messages.

    Hi Matt,

I recently purchased this software and so far the only issue I had was with the recovering of deleted messages. All other tools seem to work fine.

The problem is on my S5. I have manually rooted the phone. So before the scan started I got prompted on my phone by SuperSU to Grant root to Dr software, which I did. Then your software crashed. As I said I have purchased this license and wish it to work correctly. I tried to do it again and the second time there was no prompt but the software did not scan the entire phone.

Question: Because it kept freezing at 90% prior to that so I assumed that the software was having trouble rooting my phone. Which is why I manually rooted it myself. Is it OK to use this software with already rooted phone?

    • Matt

yes, it seems the data recovery software has trouble rooting the phone thus it gets stuck at 90% and not able to proceed to scan the phone. in this case, you can use third party root software to get the phone rooted first. If you still have trouble recovering lost data from your Samsung phone, please follow this screenshot to send us the log files so our technician can look into the issue. sorry for any inconvenience caused.

I have an Samsung S5 and deleted a message in error but since have communicated with this contact, can I still retrieve the older message(s)?

    • Matt

it is hard to say. it will only work when the deleted messages have not been overwritten by new data saved on the phone.

  4. mitch

i tried the data recovery on my samsung j7 prime.. when it was aroung 90%, it became unresponsive and my phone switched off.. until now, i can’t switch it on.. help!

    • Matt

sorry for the inconvenience caused. you can try to uninstall its battery, wait for sometime before you re-install it, then power on the phone again see if any luck. If the problem persists, please send us the log files as shown from this picture so our support team can look into the issue and provide specific instructions.

  5. Alvin

I ran the trial version and it seemed to work fine. However, some of the recovered text messages don’t show the entire message and include a series of asterisks. As an example: Hey, I’ll meet y**********************************
Other messages show a bunch of different characters and I think those have been overwritten. Does the series of asterisks *********** show the data has been overwritten or is this because the trial version doesn’t show the message in it’s entirety? Will the full purchased version reveal the entire message?

  6. Gul

Sir please update me that can I reterieve the recorded audio data from the Samsung Glaxy S6 which i deleted 5 months ago? After deleting the audio files I may update the mbile software more than 3 times. Is it possible to reterive the data? Please help thanks.

    • Matt

the chance to get them back is slim. but if they are very important and still worth a try, you can go to download the Android phone data recovery software on to your PC, connect your phone to PC via USB, then run the recovery program, select the audio file type and scan your phone see if any luck. note that the free trial version allows you to scan Android devices and preview data, in order to extract those found data to computer, you will need to buy the full version.

    Many Thanks

    • Matt

can you please provide us the specific phone model number? or you can follow instructions as shown in above guide see if any luck.

  8. Vonda Johnson

How do you get back out of developer mode when doing this.

    • Matt

Can you please explain the issue? The above Samsung messages recovery solution requires Developer Options and the USB debugging (which is one of the developer options) to be enabled on the phone.

  9. Katrina

Hi o need help im not good with computers but i reset my phone because it was slow an i forgot i jad important messages on it i really need them back gor court jow do i get them back??? Please help

    • Matt

You can download the above android phone data recovery software on to your PC or Mac computer, turn on USB debugging on the phone, then connect up your phone to computer via USB, after that run the recovery software to scan your phone see if the deleted messages can be found or not. More details can be found from above tutorial.

I have a Samsung Galaxy 5 mini – model number SM-G800F. This is not on the list. Can I retrieve a deleted text message? Nicola

    • Matt

not all supported phone models are listed in above post. the Android phone recovery software works with Samsung SM-G800F. you can give it a shot. deleted text messages can be retrieved from the phone unless they have been overwritten by new data.

  11. Joan

Can I retrieve messages that are three (3) to six months (6) months old?

    • Matt

generally speaking, the chance to restore those recently deleted data is higher. sometimes however data deleted long time ago can be found and recovered, but not those recently deleted files. It can only retrieve those deleted messages that have NOT been overwritten by new data saved on your phone. You can download the free trial version on to your computer above and give it a shot see if any luck.

  12. Natalie Witherington

Hi, paid for full version to retrieve deleted test off a samsung galaxy note 3. Phone gets to 90% and won’t analyse any further plus phone turns itself on and off repeatedly whilst analysing. Any ideas? If does t work I would like a refund as 30 day back guarantee. Thanks

    • Matt

I have a Samsung Galaxy s5, model type is SM-G900A, android 5.0 and when I tried the free trial to unlock my screen pattern and recover my messages, it says device not supported or found. Will there be any updates to this particular phone so I can retrieve my messages and photos?

    • Matt

The “Remove Android Screen Lock” tool built-in this android phone data recovery currently only support a few Samsung galaxy phone models. If your phone model is not supported, you will get a message also a link saying “data recovery cann’t currently be supported for your device”. you can click on this link to submit your phone brand, name and model number, so our development team will consider to add the support in future upgrades. Alternatively you can also contact our development team following the steps as shown in this screenshot, make sure to leave us a valid email and also explain the issue in details, so our technicians can get back to your with more specific instructions or any updates in the future.

  14. carrie

    I have an s5 neo…not in the list …suggestions?

    • Matt

what’s the specific phone model number and Android version please? how did you lose the data on the phone, deleted by mistake or else?

  15. Matt

Do you mean the recovery software can scan your phone but no messages can be found? If so, the deleted messages may have already be overwritten by new data saved on the phone.

  16. Barbanne

Hi I have downloaded this app and it just doesn’t work on my S5. I’ve uninstalled and re-installed it twice and tried several times but it just says it has failed. Thank goodness I didn’t buy the full version! I can’t find anything else out there that supposedly retrieves texts, so I guess I’m screwed.

    • Matt

This app does not work with all Android phone models. We recommend anyone who want to retrieve lost data try this free trial version before they buy. We will improve the performance of this Android phone recovery software in future upgrades. sorry for the inconvenience caused.

    • Matt

  17. erin

I downloaded the free trial …to recover recently deleted texts on Galaxy S5. The only texts it showed were the ones that were NOT deleted and are still on the phone now. They were deleted just 3 days ago, and I am sure not rewritten over, it is a very new phone with barely any storage used. Only 2 texts came in after the original deleted from a different contact.
    Please help. thanks.

    • Matt

You can restart the Android phone recovery software, disconnect and reconnect your phone via USB, then scan your phone again see if any update.

It is not only new texts that can overwrite those deleted text messages. The deleted data can be rewritten when you browse the web, check emails, download apps, etc.

  18. debbie

I am using Samsung s4..I would like to recover.whatsapp messages deleted since about 5.months ago..Also would like to recover same thing on my Samsung s3. is it possible..thanks

    • Matt

you can use this Android phone data recovery software to recover WhatsApp messages from Samsung Galaxy S4, S3. However since the data was deleted long time ago, the chance you can get them back is slim. When the deleted files have been overwritten by new data saved on the phone, you can’t get them back.

  19. Paddy

I have a Samsung S5 SM G9001, I can’t get passed the Analyzing stage. I keep getting “the one click Root failed”. I’ve tried it in Recovery mode and it also failed.

    • Matt

this Android phone recovery will try to root the phone before scan it, it will remove root from the phone when the recovery ends. The rooting may fail thus you get above error message. you may consider to root the phone using a third party rooting software first. Rooting can help the recovery to gain root priviledge and thus scan your phone’s internal storage for those deleted data. Note that by rooting the phone, you may void its warranty and there is still a chance you may not find or recover those deleted data after rooting. If the deleted files have been overwritten, the recovery software will not be able to find them or retrieve them back.

  20. kent

If I buy the full version will I be able to retrieve deleted messages from a s5 from 5-6 months ago?

    • Matt

You can try the free trial version to make sure the deleted messages you want to get back can be found after scanning your Galaxy S5. You will be able to scan your phone and preview lost data using the trial version. If the free version can help you find the lost data from Galaxy S5, you can then buy the full version to retrieve those deleted messages from phone to computer.

  21. Jim

THANKS for the reply Matt. But it did not work. It failed when attempting to “analyze the data”. I have read where getting root access on these new phones is now next to impossible. Really is a shame. I would pay to get them back. Not trying to do any harm with “root” access, just trying to see if I could get them back. I really wish I had not upgraded to 5.0, since it looks like there are ways with older version of Android. I guess I learned a valuable lesson about backing up. If you have any other ideas, please let me know.

    • Matt

The phone recovery will try to root the phone and get Superuser access. If it failed in this process, it will fail to analyze device. This does not mean the recovery software does not work with any phone that is running on Android 5.0. Although the success rate of data recovery from Android 5.0 is much lower than earlier Android versions. Now you can try to use a third party root software on computer to regain root access. Try to avoid a root app on the phone, as this can overwrite some deleted data on it. You can also submit the log files of this phone recovery software to our technician see if they can provide any more specific instructions after reading the log files. See how to send in the log files here. Another solution which is more technical, but if you like to try, you can go this link.

  22. Jim

I deleted over 1000 text messages on my phone this morning. Would LOVE to get them back if possible.
My phone is Samsung Galaxy S5
    Model Number SM-G900A
    Android Version 5.0
Is there a way for determine if the software may work before purchasing it for this device?

    • Matt

It is hard to say whether it will work for your phone or not. Sometimes it may work for one phone but not another in the same model number or Android version due to the users’ configurations or settings on the device. Based on our in-house test, we find it works with SM-G900A which is running on android 4.4.2 or 4.4.4; and we tested it to be working with another similar Galaxy S5 model SM-G900AZ which is running on Android 5. The best way to find it out, is to download the free trial version on to your PC or Mac, use it to scan your phone see if the deleted text messages can be found in the scanning process. The trial version allows users to scan phone and preview data. Only when you can find the lost text messages using the free version, should you consider to buy it.

  23. Kylie

I cannot recover deleted texts. Software loads then takes me to next step to scanning however it comes up sayinf device mode verification unsuccessful. It coninues to analyze then at 20% my phone restarts and device is no longer detected.

How can I get this to work?

    • Matt

What’s your specific phone model number and Android version please?
You can refer to this troubleshooting page see if any help.

My phone is Samsung Galaxy S5
        Model Number SM-G900I
        Android Version 5.0

        • Matt

based on our experiment, the android phone recovery works with the phone model and Android version as mentioned above.
have you tried the troubleshooting tips as mentioned in our last response? If still no luck, you can submit the log files to our engineers, so they can look into the issue.

  24. Summer

I got the call history, but I found some information was shown like this; 05%#@@@ 0 in telephone number section.
Also, the date was wrong. The date shown is day when it was scanned. Also, in type , unknown was shown, the time was shown 6 hours. ( I think this time is total time for each call.) I think that this is not extracted correctly. But I want this to be shown correctly. (each call, each time) When I buy full version, do you think I can see the correct information?

    • Matt

It seems some deleted data has been overwritten on your phone. When data overwritten occurs, you can’t recover them using the full version of this data recovery.

  25. Suzanne

    Hi Matt!
I need to retrieve deleted text messages for a court case to show a judge (harassment suit/ restraining order) and was wondering if the trial version will allow me to review those and be able to print the conversation(s) from my computer for the judge. I don’t need them to be restored on my phone, just to access them from my computer and print them out.

    • Matt

The free version allows you to scan and preview those deleted text messages. You can then capture the screen on your computer. However you will not be able to print them out using the free version of this Android phone recovery.
Using the full version, you will be able to export the deleted text messages from mobile phone to computer as HTML files and other formats. You will then be able to print them out with well organized format.

  26. kris

Just wanted to let u know your downloaded software has totally destroyed my phone. It continually shuts on and off and freezes. Wow thanks so much!!

    • Matt

sorry for the inconvenience caused. It seems to be an incompatibility issue.
you can uninstall the software from your computer and its app from the app manager on your phone, you can also send us some screenshots via email to illustrate the problem you meet, so we can analyze the issue further.

  27. Amanda

I’m interested to know if the trial version allows you to atleast view part of a deleted text. I need to retrieve a deleted text that has a phone number in the beginning part of the message. So basically I just need to be able to view the first 10 characters of a text (or 13 if hyphens were used). Will the free trial version allow me to view that information or will I need to upgrade to the full version?

    • Matt

You can do it with just the free version.
The free version of the mobile phone recovery software allows you to scan your Samsung phone and preview deleted text messages and other data.

  28. grace

Hey I turned off my phone and went to school and I put it in my back pack and I took it out after school and it was on and had this screen where they asked if I had an email account or something so I tried to get out of it and then when I finally found how it had a button that said home screen so I pressed it and it brought me to the home screen but all my stuff was gone can u help me please

    • Matt

It seems your phone has been reset thus you lost all personal data on it.
What’s your phone model number and Android version if it is an Android phone?
Have you ever backed up your phone to a computer or cloud service before?
If no backups created before, you can download the Android phone recovery software on to your Windows or Mac computer, then follow above instructions to scan your phone see if the deleted data can still be found and recovered.

  29. scott

With the full version, will the lost files show on the phone or only the pc?

    • Matt

You can firstly recover the lost files from mobile phone to PC. After the recovery, you can transfer some of them back on to your phone, such as contacts, photos, videos. Some file types can’t be put back on to the phone currently, like call history, text messages, whatsapp conversations, etc.

  30. Betty

How do you delete these messages once you have recovered them? Is there a way to permanently delete them?

    • Matt

Since the messages have already been deleted on the phone, you do not need to delete them again unless you want to sell, trade in or donate the phone. Any new data saved on to your phone in the future may overwrite these deleted data on the phone which makes them unrecoverable.

  31. Benjamin

Yes, I have an S5 G900A 4.4.4 and it does say the device is not supported. A lot of people have been saying the same thing. Any way this can be fixed?

    • Matthew

Samsung SM-G900A is a supported model. Some error prompt are generic, they may not show the actual source of failure.

We have tested the phone recovery for S5 SM-G900A Android 4.4.2 successfully. We did not test it for Android 4.4.4 though. Except this Samsung S5 models, this software is compatible with other S5 models, such as S5 SM-G900I, SM-G900F, SM-G900P, SM-G900S, SM-G900T, SM-G900V, SM-G900X and so on.

It says that device mode verification. Unsuccessful. Analyzing data failed. Alternative failed… then I got currently data recovery from your device can not be supported. If you still want to recover your data, please root your device first. What is that?

    I have a Samsung s5

    • Matthew

What’s your Android Version and specific Model Number please?

You can try following simple steps see if any help:
      1. disconnect your phone from USB, then reconnect;
      2. disable & re-enable USB debugging on your phone;
      3. close any phone management software on PC and unneccesary apps on Samsung phone;
      4. restart the Android phone recovery software on your PC.

  34. Jen

well I downloaded the free version to see if it would work. but I cannot get passed the 2nd step. I have the s5 it just keeps saying to re connect and try again. also how do I turn off devolvement mode? thanks!

    • Matt

Make sure to connect your phone using the original USB data cord comes with the phone, after the connection, double check see if your phone can be accessed through Windows Explorer. Close any other phone management software on PC and related apps on the phone. Then start the Android recovery program on your PC see if it can also identify your device and follow on-screen tips to proceed. Sometimes, restart the Android recovery software, disconnect/reconnect your phone can fix this issue. You can find more troubleshooting tips here.

You can turn off any option under the developemnt mode or options, such as the USB debugging. However the Developer Mode or Developer Options can’t be removed from the Settings on your phone once it has been enabled. One method to hide the developer options is to do a factory reset on the phone, however this will delete all your personal data on the phone.

  35. JM

    I have an s4 , stopped at 90% . why?

    • Matt

try to stop the scanning, then disconnect your phone from USB and reconnect, start to scan the phone again see if any help.
You can find more troubleshooting tips from this Androd data recovery guide.

    Download won’t open

    • Matt

Latest update: Android phone recovery for Mac is also available now. It works similar as the Windows version.
Which device are you using when you download the software?
It is an .exe file, you have to download and run it on Windows PC. If you are using a mobile phone, like Samsung galaxy phone, or using a Mac computer, you will not be able to download it.
Please double check and keep us updated.

  37. Lori

How much is the full version? Your website does not say. The Buy Now button only opens a form to enter my information without disclosing the price first.

    Thank you,

    • Matt

it is $49.95, life-time license, free upgrade. you can find it besides the quantity, see this order page.
Once you open this page, you will find Product Name, Quantity, Price above an orange PayPal check out button.

    • Matt

      Hi Kristen,

The trial version can only scan the device to preview the lost data. You need the registered version to recover and save the scanned data from Android phone to your computer. That’s the only difference between them.
Text messages along with the attached files such as photos or other files will be extracted from phone to PC. They will be saved in both CSV file and HTML file. You can open the text messages in CSV file in Microsoft Excel, text messages will be kept in clear layout in HTML file, so you can read them easily using any web browser on your computer.
You can preview all the messeges found in the trial version. A full version will not make any difference at this point. However if you want to recover your gallery, videos, audio, documents, you will have the options to choose Standard or Advanced scanning modes before scanning your device. The Advanced mode is able to recover more data from your phone.

  39. Arvid

there’s no way I can get Dr. Fone to scan my Galaxy S4. All I get are messages like starting phone (which it then does) repatedly. Or trying alternatives. All to no avail.

Works fine on my Galaxy S3, but that’s rooted.

Does the S4 have to be rootet as well? I don’t want to root it.
    Do you have a solution?
    Thank you

Admittedly, the phone recovery works better with rooted phones. However this should be the last resort. Only when your phone can’t be identified or accessed, you need to consider rooting the phone.
You can double check the troubleshooting tips from the lower part of this page see if any help: https://www.softwarert.com/android-data-recovery-guide/

      Good luck.

what I’m wanting to do is retrieve all text messages, deleted and not deleted, to and from one particular number, and have them copied to my computer. Is there a way to do this in a short amount of time? I understand that limiting the search to text messages speeds the process.

If you can outline the steps for this process that would be great. And I assume I can’t actually have the files go to my computer without purchasing the product, right?

      Hi Michael,
You can use this recovery tool to retrieve all text messages, both deleted and not deleted, from Android smartphone to computer. Currently there is no option to allow users to scan and search for text messages to and from one particular number, it will be all text messages, multimedia messages and their attached files. Once the phone recovery has finished the scanning, you can choose to recover text messagess from any or all contacts/numbers from phone to PC.
The recovery time it takes depends on your Android phone storage and its usage. It should not take long time. As you already know that, you can limit the search to text messages only which can greatly speed up the process. If it take very long time in scanning your phone, you can cancel the process, disconnect and reconnect your phone, then start over again see if any update.
On the trial version of this Android data recovery software, you will be able to scan your phone for the deleted or not deleted files, after that you can preview the data see if it was what you are looking for. When the lost files are found, and you want to extract it from phone to your computer, you will need to purchase the full version of this Android data recovery. You can order it directly within the software menu, or get it from this link: https://www.softwarert.com/product/dr-fone-android/

What is the trail version, I accidentally erased all my texts from a friend who passed a way while using my galaxy s5. How can I get these messages back.

The free trial version offers the first time users the opportunity to scan and find lost files on their Android phones, so they can make sure the data recovery tool works for them before they buy the full version.
You can download the trial version on to your PC and follow above instructions to scan your phone see if the lost messages can be found. To get the full version, you can order it from this page https://www.softwarert.com/product/dr-fone-android/ .
When you placed the order, you will get an order confirmation email with the license code in just minutes. You can then use the license code to register the trial version and thus get the fully functional version.
