Setup VPN on Samsung Mobile Phones

VPN is short for Virtual Private Network. They are often used within organisations as internal networks which allows employees to work from home or even from different countries and areas while ensuring the security and privacy of company data. Many individuals use VPN to add an extra layer of security and privacy as VPNs mask your IP addresses, encrypt your internet connection, help safeguard personal data, etc.

You may already know how to set up VPN service on a desktop computer, such as Windows PC or Mac OS X, but do you know you can also add VPN to mobile phones. Most smart phones nowadays support VPN. In this guide, we will demonstrate how Samsung mobile phone users can set up VPN on Samsung mobile devices, such as the Samsung Galaxy phones and tablets.

VPN - Virtual Private Network

There are mainly two ways to set up a VPN on a a Samsung mobile phone. You can manually add a VPN configuration to your mobile device or install dedicated VPN apps which can help you automatically setup the VPN on your phone.

Method 1. Manually Setup VPN on Samsung Mobile

Open Settings on Samsung phone screen. You will find Connections at the top section of the screen. Tap on Connections, then More connection settings, More networks, or on some devices More settings.

Choose VPN > Add VPN, Add VPN profile or on some devices Add VPN network.

You will be taken to a screen where you can add the VPN details. These information are required to connect your device to the VPN network, such as VPN server address, username and password. Your VPN details will be provided by your VPN provider, you can contact them directly if you are unsure of any of these details.

On this screen, you need to choose a name for the new VPN network in the Name box. It could be something like My VPN, VPN, Matt’s VPN, Joe’s VPN, or something else that is descriptive. Select VPN Type, PPTP, L2TP, IPSec, or OpenVPN. PPTP is enabled by default, you can leave it as, change it only when you have to. PPP encryption (MPPE) option is enabled by default. If you use PPTP, make sure this option is turned on. Server address is the IP address to your VPN server. Double check the VPN server address to make sure to input the correct IP address or contact your VPN service provider if you are unsure of it.

Tap the Save button to save your VPN configuration.

Method 2. Using a VPN app on the phone

Many VPN providers offer their own apps for Android, which can simplify the setup process. Go to the Google Play Store, search for your preferred VPN provider’s app, and install it. If you’re a new user, you may need to sign up for an account with your chosen VPN service. Most of them require a fee to use though. The rates they charge and steps to use them may vary slightly depending on the specific VPN service or app you choose.

How to Connect to VPN on Samsung Mobile Phones?

If you are accessing your VPN directly through the provider’s app you do not need to follow the steps below. Following instructions apply to those manually configured VPN profiles through the phone’s Settings other than dedicated VPN apps.

After saving the VPN configuration, it should appear in the list of VPNs. Tap on the VPN name to connect. Once connected, you’ll see a VPN key icon in the status bar on your Samsung Galaxy phone.

Sometimes when you try to connect to a VPN network, a new dialogue pops up. Input the User name and Password of your VPN account, check Save account information so the next time you can quickly connect to this VPN network without the need to type in your VPN credentials again. Finally tap on Connect button to connect to the VPN network on your Samsung smart phone or tablet.

Extra VPN for Samsung Mobile Tips

If you can’t connect to VPN on Samsung due to the wrong VPN server address, you can go to the VPN settings window on Samsung phone, long press on the VPN network to reveal the Edit network option and change your VPN settings and configuration.
