Share music songs through WhatsApp on Android

WhatsApp is one of the most popular instant messaging app among mobile phones user. It is however not only an instant messenger. Except sending messages, it can also help users send photos, videos, audios, documents, location, contacts and even music songs from one phone to another. It appears to be very easy and straightforward to exchange files and documents via WhatsApp. But, if you try to send a music track using WhatsApp, tap on the Audio button, you will notice that WhatsApp doesn’t have the option to add MP3, or any music files from your music library on the phone. Instead, you will only get the WhatsApp Recorder which you can use to record audios and send them via WhatsApp to other people. Is it possible to send music songs through WhatsApp? Share music songs through WhatsApp on Android mobile phones

Note that in this article, we will use an Android powered smartphone to do that. The same process does not apply to WhatsApp on iPhone or other platforms.

If you also use email on the mobile, you may already know that you can attach a file to email in two ways. You can jump into the mail app, create a new email, then tap the attach button to browse to your phone storage and pick up files to send via email. Other than that, you can also find the files in a file manager app on the phone, then tap share option, choose to share via email, this can also attach a file to email. Similarly you can also follow this process to attach MP3, AAC, M4A, WMA, OGG and other music songs in other supported audio formats to share via WhatsApp.

We will use Samsung Galaxy phone in the demo. On Galaxy phones, you have the My Files stock file manager on the device. You can firstly head to My Files, tap Audio from its home screen, so all music songs, sound recordings will be listed here. Long press on the song you like to share to select it, and tap the checkbox before other song tracks, if you like to send multiple music songs at one time. After that you can see the Share button at the top of your phone screen. Tap on the Share icon, the classic Share via screen opens up with Bluetooth, Email, Messages, and any other compatible apps displayed. WhatsApp can be found in the Share via app selection screen as well. Tap WhatsApp, then select the contact that you want to share the audio or music file with. Finally touch the Send button at the screen bottom, the selected songs will be shared with the chosen contact through WhatsApp on your Android mobile phone.

What audio file formats does WhatsApp support?

Common audio formats for Android should also be supported, such as mp3, wma, aac, m4a, amr, ogg, mid, wav, , flac and so on. We have not found this information on the WhatsApp website though. Can I transfer music videos using WhatsApp?

If you send a music in a format is not supported by Whatsapp, you will get the error message. In this case, you can try to rename the file and change its file extension to .mp3 or other supported format using a file manager on the phone. After that share the music via WhatsApp and send. Make sure to tap and play the file in WhatsApp on the receiving device see if it is playable, or change it back to its extension see if any luck. Otherwise, you may need to use an audio or video editor app to convert the music videos before you share them in WhatsApp.

Share music via Bluetooth

Except WhatsApp, you can share music between Android phones in several other ways, including Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Direct, NFC, online cloud storage, transfer apps, etc.

You can pair the two Android phones via Bluetooth, and then use the file-sharing feature to send music files from one phone to the other. This is suitable for small file transfers. Depending on the size and number of music files you want to share, choose the method suits your needs the best.

  1. I used to drag the MP3 music to Whatsapp and the recipient just click on play. Since the upgrade on Whatsapp the recipient of the song has to download before they can play. How do I share for instant play?

    1. does it happen to only those long music files? you can try to share a very short audio clip see if it can be played instantly.
