How to take photos while recording videos on iPhone?

Sometimes you may accidentally switched to the Video mode when you want to capture an image. Thus you record a video instead of capturing a still picture on iPhone. If you failed to take a photo in the first place, you can take a snapshot of the video or extract still frames or pictures from the video. Other than this, is there any faster or easier way to achieve this? One hidden feature of the Camera app on iPhone that has been ignored by many users is that it supports image capture while recording. It means you can actually take pictures when a video is being recorded without the need to switch to the Photo capture mode. In this quick guide, we will show you how to capture a picture while recording a video on iPhone.

How to take photos and record videos at the same time on iPhone?

Launch the default Camera app on iPhone. Switch from the Photo mode to the Video mode from the screen bottom. Point your camera to what you like to capture and press the Record button in the bottom middle to start capturing the video. At the bottom left corner, you can see the photo-shutter button. If you like to take pictures during the video recording process, simply touch the shutter button. This will not disturb the video recording. You can press the shutter button many times to capture multiple photos while recording the video on iPhone. See below screenshot.

Image capture while recording VS video snapshot

If you do a snapshot on the video, you extract still frame from the video, the snapshot or picture will be exported in the same resolution as source video without any quality loss. For example, if the width and height of the video is 1280*720px, then the extracted picture would be 1280*720px as well.

Images captured while recording an HD 720p video or Full HD 1080p video are saved in 1980*3520px resolution on my iPhone 8 Plus. When I set a higher video resolution to 4K from Camera settings, the photos will be captured at the higher resolution, 2160*3840px. The image quality is good enough for amateurs. Although you can’t compare them to those photos captured in the Photo mode though.

Also the image captured in the video recording process will be saved as JPG file format other than the new HEIC format on iPhone.

Now you know how to take photos and record videos simultaneously on iPhone.
