Install unknown apps on Tecno mobile phone

Google Play Store is the recommended and secure platform for downloading apps and games on almost all Android powered smartphones. Other than that, many smartphone manufacturers offer their own app stores as an alternative to the Google Play Store, such as Samsung Galaxy Store, Amazon Appstore, Huawei’s AppGallery, Xiaomi App store, OPPO App Market, etc. Additionally there are some third-party sources where users can get apps from, such as APKMirror, GetJar, etc.

Under some situations we may want to install apps from third-party sources. For example, certain apps or games may not be available on the Google Play Store; you may want to install specific versions of an app.

As a security measure, Android phones are set to disallow app installation that are downloaded from third-party and unknown sources. If you downloaded an app or APK file from another source other than Google Play Store, you won’t be able to install it by default. When you tried to do so, the system warns you that your phone is not allowed to install unknown apps from this source for your security.

To install an APK not downloaded from the Play Store, you need to enable the ‘Unknown Sources’ option from Settings. Here’s how you can install APK files on Tecno mobile phone which is running on HiOS V6. Remember that Android versions and device models may have slight variations in the menu names and locations, so the instructions may not be exactly the same for every device.

Search and enable unknown sources in Settings

Typically, Android allows users to do a search to find and access specific settings and options on their phone. In the Settings app, look for a search bar at the top or near the top of the screen. On some devices, it may be labeled as “Search”, “Search Settings” or represented by a magnifying glass icon. You can type your search query or keyword related to the setting you’re looking for here and quickly jump into the settings. On Tecno mobile, you should be able to search and find “install unknown apps” or “unknown sources.” Then tap on the result to navigate directly to that setting and allow the installation of apps from third-party websites or resources.

Installing apps from unknown sources extra tips

  • Note that your phone and personal data are more vulnerable to attack by unknown apps. By installing apps from this source, you agree that you are responsible for any damage to your phone or loss of data that may result from their use. So don’t allow unknown or untrusted app to install apps, or install an app from an untrusted source.
  • Once you turned it on from your phone settings and managed to install the app you need, you should go to turn it off immediately.
  • Different Android or HiOS version may rename the setting to Install unknown apps. On my Tecno Camon 15 which is running on HiOS 6 and Android 10, it is named as ‘Install unknown apps’, ‘Allow from this source’. On other Tecno phone, it may name the option as ‘Unknown sources’ like many other Android devices or else.
  • Also this option may be found in different locations on different phone models. That’s why you may be told to find this option from Security, Apps & notifications, or other places.
  • Last but not least, enabling Unknown Sources on your Tecno phone is just the first step you can install apk files or apps from third-party sources. Not all apps can be installed on your phone. If you found apps cannot be installed on your phone, you can check compatibility, system requirements, storage usage, region restrictions, and so on.
