Send books from Calibre to Kindle through Gmail

In an earlier post, we introduced several easy ways we can send books, documents to the Kindle device via USB, Email, Send to Kindle app and the web app. If you use Calibre to manage, create and convert e-books, you may notice that Calibre has the built-in feature to share books by email. Is it possible to integrate Calibre with your email account, such as Gmail, Outlook, AOL mail, and send books from Gmail, Outlook or other email to Kindle in Calibre? Yes, you can do that. However, the email setup in Calibre is a bit more complicated than usual, because it requires some additional settings to be enabled.

For example, you can add your Gmail to Calibre to send books. Calibre doesn’t offer “Sign in with Google,” thus you need to generate an App Password from your Gmail account and use it in Calibre instead of the normal password you use to login Gmail from the web or other email clients. An App Password is a 16-digit passcode that gives a less secure app or device permission to access your Google Account. App Passwords can only be used with accounts that have 2-Step Verification turned on. That’s to say, you have to turn on 2-Step Verification in Gmail settings before you can create or use App Passwords. Once we complete the email configuration in Calibre, you will be able to use the software more efficiently and get better results.

Tip: App Passwords aren’t recommended by Google as they are unnecessary in most cases. To help keep your account secure, Google recommend users use the “Sign in with Google” feature to connect apps to your Google Account. Since Calibre doesn’t offer “Sign in with Google,” we can either:

Use App Passwords

or

Send books using a more secure email app or from the web

You can follow these instructions to setup Calibre with Gmail on Windows computer.

Step 1. Enable 2-Step verification in Google Account

Log on your Google account from a desktop browser, such as Edge, Chrome, Firefox, on your PC.

In the navigation panel, select Security. Under “How you sign in to Google” or “Signing in to Google,” select 2-Step Verification. Get started. Follow the on-screen steps.

The App Password is the 16-character code. Copy the generated password and paste it into the notepad for something for the next step. Since you’ll only have to enter an App Password once per app or device, so don’t worry about memorizing it.

Step 3. Set up Gmail in Calibre

Open Calibre, go to Preferences > Sharing > Sharing books by email.

Calibre for Windows - Preferences Sharing books by email.

Click on Add email to add your Kindle email address. Add Gmail to the “Send Email From:” Field. Add email server details as shown below:

Step 5. Send books from Calibre to Kindle via email

Now, when you want to send a book to your Kindle via email from Calibre, you can select the Email option from the Connect/share menu, and Calibre will automatically use the email settings you just set up to send the book to your Kindle email address. Alternatively, simply right click on a title in Calibre library, choose Connect/share > Email to, select your Kindle email address and send.

When Calibre detects you are trying to send some books or documents not in suitable formats, it offers the option to auto convert the books to EPUB before sending them via email. Click Yes to start the conversion and email process.

Once the book is sent, you should see it in your Kindle library.

    1. you can go to open a book in Kindle, then tap at the top of the screen > Aa > More > Reading Progress > Page in Book. also note that not all books support page numbers. Some titles don’t support page numbers and only offer locations. It’s up to the publisher to provide users with page numbers.
